Workforce Development

Franklinton Rising recruits, mentors, teaches, trains, and helps place at-risk, disadvantaged young adults, ages 17 to 24, who are living in poverty, with great companies in the building trades in Central Ohio.

These young adults, both men and women, are either in high school, have recently graduated, or have perhaps dropped out. Typically, they do not have a positive view of work, have not learned the value of knowledge, and have had little or no positive influence to help them develop life or work skills, which would make them attractive to prospective employers.

There are thousands of such young adults in Franklin County who lack preparation for a productive life. However, they possess the capacity to break free and become great workers, with the skills and confidence to learn, respect others, and become positive role models.

Paid apprentices building affordable housing.

Franklinton Rising's State Certified Pre-apprenticeship program has 8 to 12 young adults working part-time as paid apprentices, in each neighborhood where we are building affordable housing. Each apprentice has a unique plan for their development, based upon available hours, living conditions, transportation, and any school requirements.

Building affordable housing is a laboratory for helping them learn basic construction skills as they work on almost all aspects of residential construction. They develop self-confidence and the life skills required of both residential and commercial construction companies. We are simultaneously mentoring and building a relationship of trust, helping them to overcome life obstacles and develop a desire for a more positive way of living than what they have typically experienced.

 Preparing for a better future

We desire to offer an opportunity to all young adults, regardless of their background, who are willing to work for a better future and who demonstrate a desire to learn construction skills.

Each apprentice, in addition to life and basic construction skills, is supported in obtaining a driver’s license, securing reliable transportation, and interviewing with leading construction companies to launch a career. On average, an apprentice is with us part-time for close to one year before they are hired in a full-time position.
